X uses deactivation as the first step of permanent deletion. Your account is deleted only if you avoid logging in throughout the 30-day deactivation window.
Before you delete
- Request and download your X data archive before deactivating. You lose access to the archive tool after deletion.
- Revoke third-party app access so another app does not log in and reactivate the account.
- Cancel subscriptions bought through iOS or Android with that store. X says subscriptions bought on x.com cancel automatically after deactivation.
Delete your X account
- Open Settings and privacy from the X navigation menu.
- Choose Your account, then Deactivate your account.
- Read the deactivation information and select Deactivate.
- Enter your password and confirm.
- Do not log in for 30 days. Logging in during that window reactivates the account.
What happens next
After the 30-day window, X says the account is permanently deleted and the username can become available to other accounts. Search engines may retain cached results until they refresh.
Mentions of your old username in other people's posts can remain, but they will no longer link to an active profile.
