How to delete your GitHub account and data

Before you delete

• Request an account data archive and download repositories, issues, wikis, and other content you need.
• Transfer organisation ownership and repositories, or confirm that they can be deleted. Personal account deletion does not automatically solve every organisation relationship.
• Cancel paid plans and review billing. GitHub says billing stops when the personal account is deleted, but outstanding obligations still matter.

Delete your GitHub account

1. Open GitHub Settings and choose Account.
2. Use Export account data if you need an archive before deletion.
3. In the account deletion section, read the consequences and enter your username or password as requested.
4. Confirm deletion and sign out of GitHub on your devices.

What happens next

GitHub says deletion removes personal repositories, private forks, wikis, issues, pull requests, and Pages sites owned by the account. Comments and contributions in repositories owned by others can remain but are detached from your profile.

Account deletion is permanent. Transfer ownership first if another person or organisation needs to keep a repository or package.
